Sunday Spotlight: June 9, 2013

It is not just about flattery [although that is nice sometimes too ;-) ]; it is about walking away from the comment and wanting to touch on and explore an idea they have presented.  Sometimes it might just be one or two words that they have said that reaches out and elicits a response in me.

What a mess that challenge was for so many of us on the Scribbles Designs team for the theme 'Celebrate Mom or a Special Woman with Flowers'.  In case you missed it, over a third of the team combined, for either the initial challenge or the midway, managed to forget those darned flowers on our cards.  If I had the ability to draw people, I would have drawn the five of us slumped over and defeated, sitting on the curb with our crafting supplies at our feet and Sandy slamming the door behind us.  I don't know what is was about those flowers that messed so many of us up!  Talk about team camaraderie, we even manage to stick together as a team when we screw up!  Thankfully our fearless leader is rather easy going and is willing to continue to put up with the lot of us!

Once more I am reminded that I am part of something bigger than just just me alone in my corner of the world.  I have co-workers of a sort again.  People who support each other and are there for each other through successes and screw-ups alike!  Thanks Calypso for reminding me of that and contributing towards an atmosphere that gives me a sense of belonging.

I love nautical themed cards, I'm born and raised by the sea and I just love the salty air, but I prefer to stand on solid ground, strangely enough... I remember a trip to the Azores - I wanted to go on a boat trip and I insisted on a full day trip instead of a 3 hour one. That meant approx 10 hours of thinking of nothing other than the film "The perfect storm". Well, nobody's perfect... I just love how cards or other projects can create such scenes and evoke incredible memories in us when we look at the images and/or sentiments contained within them.  In Pia's case, the nautical scene of the birthday card I created brought her back to a trip from the past.  Granted, it may not have been the best memory, reliving the fear of being on the boat for so long but it did remind her once again of her love for the sea.  Good or bad, our memories makes us who we are and it is just a matter of learning the lessons contained within the experiences we encountered in our past.  It is amazing how looking at a card can bring us to those places.

Okay, I admit it.  This one was strictly picked by my ego.  Aren't warm fuzzies wonderful to experience?  I am fortunate that I receive them often in one form or other from my many wonderful readers.  This one just really called to me.  It is nice to know that I continue to inspire some of you out there.  That is one of my goals and apparently I'm meeting it.  Additionally, Desire touches on something else that is important to me--honouring you guys for the successes you achieve.  Remember those warm fuzzies I talked about?  Well, everyone deserves them and that is why I work so hard to acknowledge as many of you as I can each month.

So, thanks Desire and so many of you out there for noticing the hard work I put into this blog, bringing you the kinds of features you like to see.  Oh and Desire, who knows?  If I ever come into a few million dollars maybe I will make it half way around the world so that we can meet in person.  It would certainly be a privilege to do so.

Although I have already thanked her, I don't think that Vicky truly has an idea of what an incredible honour it was to receive this comment.  It truly meant the world to me.  You see I've always wanted to write creatively.  I even started a book several years ago that just never went anywhere past the first two chapters unfortunately.  

Now, throughout my career working in the field of disabilities, I did do a LOT of professional writing.  I wrote curriculum, instruction manuals and many, many handouts/worksheets for teaching learning strategies to students primarily with learning disabilities.  My proudest accomplishment is a 300 + page manual I wrote back in 1998 called Train the Trainer:  Literacy and Learning Disabilities.  It is a training package developed as a resource for literacy personnel who will be training literacy practitioners working with adults who have learning disabilities. Got it?  I know, it is a mouthful.  It is intended to be used by teachers and trainers who have already gone through the training themselves. Even today, fifteen years later, it is still a resource available in certain libraries and when I did a search tonight to see if there is still information on it out there in cyberland, I found it listed in a "Best Practices and Innovations" document.  So, I can still be proud after all this time that something I created is still being circulated.  

Even though I had successes as a professional writer, it didn't curb the desire to write creatively.  However, since I have embarked on a new path in life, blogging and card making, I am finding new opportunities to practice my writing skills.  If you have been following me these past few months, you will have noticed that I have started creating storylines for the many beloved images I use, showcase or promote.  As a result of this endeavour, I have been asked by Sandy, the owner of Scribbles Designs to carry the stories I create here for your entertainment over to the Scribbles Designs Challenge blog.  I even have a brand new spiffy title, and badge to go along with the position.

Is that cool or what?  

So, who knows what the future will hold.  Maybe there will be an illustrated book starring the infamous "B"*  and his adventures in witness protection, or a pamphlet on the importance of birth control starring Bellina, Maximus, Benito and the horde of MacBunnys^  to come.  Or, maybe they will all pay a visit to the fantasy world of the Magic Tree~. The future is wide open and I am just happy to be writing once again.

This is such a positive and inspirational post and I couldn't agree more. The key to happiness is seeing the positives in every day things and drip feeding ourselves with a little bit of happiness every day. We need to be happy in our own lives and appreciate things we have, the new car or bright shiny object with not bring us happiness, only a large price tag and even worse debt. I think as crafters we get to play all the time and absorb ourselves in something that makes us happy, and we give to others in the process, thus spreading our happiness to other people. Mandy's comment resonates so well with the point I was trying to get across in the post I did for a recent Motivational Monday (if you are interested you can see that original post HERE).  It is so wonderful knowing that people are reading these posts and walking away thinking about what I have said.  It makes the time and effort I put in to creating them worthwhile in so many different ways.  I also abide with what Mandy had to say at the end of her comment.  I completely agree that since we as crafters have the opportunity to do something we love and play a little bit--weekly for some of us, daily for the luckiest of us--we are in a unique position to pass the happiness we experience on to others.  Whether it is by visiting a favourite blog and leaving the author a little love, creating a special card for someone we love, or just passing on words of encouragement to the people around us who may be struggling, we really do have the capacity to bring joy to others.   We are obviously surrounded by people who support us or we could never spend the time that we do creating.  It is wonderful when we can turn around and support someone else in turn.  Happiness really is contagious!

• I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one spending hours and hours making one card! I do put a lot of time and thinking to chose papers and embellishments. I don't usually have a design in mind when I make a card, and when I do, it never ends up looking anything close to what I had planned for!
