Card Design: Scribbles Designs Challenge #4--Shaped or Easel Cards

It is time for the next challenge over at the Scribbles Designs Challenge Blog.

This month we are looking for projects with Shaped Cards or Easel Cards. We want to see you think outside the box--or in this case outside the square or rectangle.  If you are like me who didn't have a clue, I can direct you to some great tutorials out there.  Just drop me a line and I can put you on to a couple of them.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE RULES for entering into our challenges HAVE CHANGED!!!

We have decided to switch things up a bit over at Scribbles Designs Challenges.  You NO LONGER NEED TO USE A SCRIBBLES DESIGNS IMAGE on your project.  You still must follow the monthly theme and you can enter as many times as you'd like AS LONG AS YOU USE A SCRIBBLES DESIGNS IMAGE. However, if you choose to enter the challenge using another artist's image you are limited to three entriesAs always, you are welcome to combine your entry with other challenges and we ask that you enter new projects/cards only - no back linking, plus the standard rules of linking your blog post and mentioning Scribbles Designs in your post.  This challenge will end at 9pm PST on May 14th.

The winner, chosen by Random.org will receive 3 digital images.  If you use a Scribbles Designs image, please add SD after your name--example: Lisa SD--and your name will be entered twice into the drawing for the prize.  Additionally, there will be 1 digital image handed out for each of the Top 3, chosen by the Scribbles Designs Design Team.  We look forward to seeing your interpretation of this month's theme.

You can purchase your Scribbles Designs images HERE.
You can also find some free sentiments from Sandy's personal blog HERE and there is a free one over on the challenge blog as well.

To help inspire you, here is a card I created using two of Sandy's wonderful images from the store.  You can purchase Brr-thday Chef HERE and the birthday cake HERE

Here is the front of the card...

With a closer look at the cake I used along with a paper rose as an enclosure...

Here is how it looks when it is opened and sitting up properly...

With a closer look at both parts...

Finally, I've tilted it for you to get a better look at the inside all together...

Here are the card details, I hope I haven't forgotten anything...

General Notes:

  • OMG with a huge capitalized bite of OMG on the side.  I have NEVER before struggled with something related to making cards in the history of making cards, as I struggled with figuring out how to make this deceptively simple looking gatefold easel card.
  • The tutorials I had, one made by our very own Naomi Edwards that was posted on San's Design a few weeks ago who specifically made it because I was struggling with this concept so much, plus a couple that I found on line were all wonderful tutorials.  The problem was all me and my inability to figure it out spatially.  You see I'm a kinesthetic learner which means that I learn best from doing and I just couldn't seem to coordinate all my senses into working together to understand how to put this together.  There were far too many occasions of hitting my forehead and calling myself stupid last month.  Yup!  I admit it. Even I get into periods of negative self-talk which of course does nothing but bring us down into a place we shouldn't be.
  • It was all down to the last possible minute with this one, I'll tell you.  Thankfully I got it in under the wire.
  • Oh and I was able to get a new light.  Look how much brighter and whiter this picture is compared to the last several and it was even taken with no daylight left so I am back on track for lighting.
  • As an aside, if any of you are interested in seeing the chaotic mess I work in, please head over to the challenge blog where Sandy showcased Sam and I this week.  The link to that post is HERE.
Digital Image:
  • Birthday Cake:  This yummy looking fire hazard on the front of the card can be found HERE.  It was coloured using Copic markersCandles:  BG10, BG15, BG18.  Flame: Y17, YR04.  Frosting:  R20, R22, R24.  Bottom layer:  R24, R29.
  • Brr-thday Chef:  The image on the inside of the card is Brrr doing his handy dandy bit in the kitchen.  Who knew penquins could cook?  Although I'm not sure how fishy that cake is going to taste.  You can find Brr-thday Chef HERE in the store.  It was coloured using Copic markers.  Brrr:  colourless blender, N0, C1, C3, C5, C7, 100 (body); Y15, YR04, YR07 (beak and feet).  Chef's Hat:  colourless blender, N0, C1, C3.  Bow tie:  BG10, BG15, BG18.  Towel:  Y11, Y13, Y15.  The cake is coloured the same as the one on the front.
Digital Sentiment:
  • Inside sentiment:  Leave it to Paulette from Create With TLC to have the perfect sentiment to go with any image or occasion.  This one was a freebie from awhile back.
Paper Products:
  • Card base: Michael's Recollection's Cardstock, white.
  • Designer Papers:  Starburst paper--Recollection's Bold Basics Paper Pad.
Embellishments:
  • Metalic floral shapes--from Dollarama.  I doubled them up and glued them together to provide more stability to keep the easel part of the card up.
  • You see that gorgeous dark red paper rose on the front of the card.  Well I must tell you it is a Naomi Edwards exclusive.  I was lucky enough to be the recipient of a goodies box from Naomi when she sent me the card I showed you awhile back.  This was just one of the wonderful finds within that wonderful gift box.  It was the absolute perfect colour and perfect accompaniment to help keep the card enclosed.  So technically this is a collaboration between the two of us since not only did she help me figure out how to create this type of card, she also contributed to the elements used!
Challenges I hope to enter include:

So get those creative juices flowing and come up with something a little out of the ordinary.  Remember you have an entire month to enter at the Scribbles Designs Challenge Blog.  While you are there, please check out the great inspiration offered up from my colleagues on the DT.  We look forward to seeing what you come up with for this month's theme!

Thank you so much for stopping by.  As I've now added to my comment section, whether you are a regular, here for the first time or popping over in your official capacity as a DT member, please know how much I appreciate the words that you leave behind.  Your encouragement helps me to become a better designer.   I try my best to reply to your comments (when an email address is available) but that is getting more and more difficult as my plate fills up with new responsibilities, new roles, and new obligations.  If I don't get the opportunity to thank you personally, know that I don't take a single comment for granted. Thank you for your understanding.

Until next time,

Note: I apologize if there are any formatting issues.  This is a scheduled post and we all know Blogger has a mind of it's own.  If it turns out that something looks wonky, i.e.--part of the sentence a different size, font or colour than the rest, I'll fix it as soon as I'm able to.

Ohhhh I'm so sorry you struggled so much for this one! And BTW you should never call yourself stupid!!! Especially when learning something new. Would you call someone else stupid?!? I really doubt it so give yourself that politeness now go on... say that you are sorry to yourself ;) Good! It's a fabulous card. Love the rose enclosure!!! Fabulous! OMG I'm turning into you with all the details I'm putting into the comment lol see what you have me do :)

FABULOUS card!!! Sorry to hear that you stressed about it! Betcha now that you've done one of this style, the next will be a cake walk! Yes, it is easy to self-doubt and berate ourselves so easily... I agree with Vicky above; say sorry to yourself - you're awesome!

Huh! I never thought I'd hear you say you were stupid because nothing could be further from the truth! You are brilliant! Look what you've accomplished in such a short time. This card turned out fabulous, pat yourself on the back and tell yourself how great you are for all you do. I'd pat you on the back everyday if I lived close enough! Hugs my friend.

Great card. I have not seen this type of fold before (combining gatefold and easel) and I think I will give it a try. Thanks for joining us at Psper Playtime this week for our fun fold challenge.
